From Totton to the M3

From most of SO40, the driver joins the M27 at junction 2 or 3 near Totton, or at junction 1 at Cadnam for the forest villages. The M27 runs east past Southampton to junction 4, where the M3 heads north through Winchester and Basingstoke to the M25. From junction 12, the driver goes clockwise to Heathrow. It is around 75 miles.

Plan on an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half in normal traffic. The M27 between junctions 3 and 5 around Southampton can be slow at rush hour, as can the A35 and A36 into Totton. The M25 approaching Heathrow is the final variable.

Across SO40

• Totton: the town centre, Calmore, Testwood and Hounsdown, close to the M271 and M27.
• Marchwood: a village on Southampton Water, home to the military port and a growing number of new homes.
• Ashurst and Woodlands: forest-edge villages with Ashurst New Forest station nearby.
• Netley Marsh, Cadnam and Copythorne: rural parishes on the edge of the New Forest, with many properties down lanes.

In the forest villages, ponies and cattle roam freely and some roads are unfenced, so drivers take extra care, especially at night. For rural addresses, add the property name and a what3words reference.

Public transport options

Totton and Ashurst have stations on the line to Southampton. From there, South Western Railway trains run towards Woking, where the RailAir coach connects to Heathrow. National Express coaches also run from Southampton to Heathrow. With connections, plan on two to two and a half hours.

For a solo traveller with light luggage, those options are cheaper. For families, older travellers or anyone with an early long-haul flight, the car is much easier.

Heathrow terminals and drop-off charges

Tell us your terminal when you book: 2 and 3 are central, 5 is at the western end, and 4 is on the southern side. Since January 2026, every entry to a Heathrow terminal drop-off zone has cost £7, with a ten-minute limit and an £80 penalty notice for overstaying, reduced to £40 within 14 days. Friends dropping off can use the Long Stay car park, where the first 30 minutes are free. Our fixed fare already includes it, so there is nothing to pay at the kerb.

Timing your pickup

As a guide, leave SO40 about three and a half to four hours before a long-haul flight. For early departures, a pickup in the small hours gets you to Heathrow on clear roads. When you book, we will recommend a pickup time based on your flight and terminal.

Coming home

The same fixed fare applies from Heathrow to SO40. Your driver tracks your flight, waits in arrivals with a name board and helps with your bags. If your flight is delayed, there is no extra charge.

Marchwood and the military port

Marchwood is home to the military port used by the armed forces for shipping vehicles and equipment, and many service personnel and contractors travel through Heathrow. If you need a pickup from a site gate, tell us which one when you book.

Families and holiday luggage

Most SO40 bookings to Heathrow are families heading off on long-haul holidays, with luggage to match. A saloon takes two large cases. For a family of four with four cases, choose an estate or MPV. Child seats are free, so give us the children's ages when you book. If you are flying with grandparents or another family, an eight-seat MPV takes everyone together, with a single fixed price for the vehicle.

Give us your flight number and terminal, the full address with postcode, the number of passengers and cases, and a mobile number. For forest properties, add directions or a what3words reference, and tell us about any gate or cattle grid. If you want to collect someone on the way, perhaps in Southampton or Winchester, add a stop and the fixed price will include it.
