Lyndhurst calls itself the capital of the New Forest, and it feels like it: a small village with a big presence, the forest's visitor centre, the Queen's House and wild ponies wandering past the shops. It is a beautiful place to live and a slightly awkward place to leave for a long-haul flight. There is no railway station, and Heathrow is around 80 miles away. A taxi from Lyndhurst SO43 to Heathrow costs from £169 for a saloon, fixed at booking, collected from your door.
Out of the forest and onto the motorway
From Lyndhurst, the driver takes the A35 or the A337 out of the village to join the M27 at junction 1 at Cadnam, or the A35 to Ashurst and Totton to pick up the M271 and M27 nearer Southampton. The M27 east connects with the M3 at junction 4, and the M3 runs north-east to the M25 at junction 12, where the driver heads clockwise to Heathrow.
It is around 80 miles. In normal traffic, plan for an hour and twenty to thirty-five minutes. The M3 around Winchester is usually steady, but the M25 near Heathrow is unpredictable, and Lyndhurst's own one-way system can be slow in summer when visitors fill the village. For an early flight, roads at 3am or 4am are clear and the trip is quicker.
Driving in the New Forest
The first and last few miles of this journey are on forest roads, where ponies, donkeys, cattle and deer roam freely and the speed limit is 40mph on many unfenced roads. Animals are killed or injured on these roads every year, and our drivers take them carefully, especially at night and in the early morning, when most accidents happen. It is one reason we build a few extra minutes into pickup times from SO43.
Where in SO43?
SO43 covers Lyndhurst itself, with the High Street, Romsey Road and the roads around Bolton's Bench, and the surrounding hamlets: Emery Down, Bank, Pikes Hill and Swan Green. Many forest properties have names rather than numbers and are reached by gravel tracks. Add the property name and a what3words reference, or brief directions from the nearest main road, and the driver will find you.
We also pick up from nearby forest villages and towns, including Brockenhurst, Minstead, Cadnam, Ashurst, Beaulieu and Burley. Enter the full address for a fixed price.
The public transport alternative
Without a station in Lyndhurst, public transport to Heathrow usually starts with a bus or taxi to Ashurst New Forest or Brockenhurst station. From there, trains run towards Southampton and Woking, and at Woking the RailAir coach links to Heathrow. National Express also runs coaches from Southampton to Heathrow. With connections, plan on two and a half to three hours.
For one traveller with a small bag and a flexible schedule, it works. For families, older travellers, or anyone with long-haul luggage and an early departure, the door-to-door car is far simpler.
What's included in the fixed fare
The £169 saloon fare covers up to four passengers with two large cases and two smaller bags, from your door to your Heathrow terminal. It includes the Heathrow drop-off charge, and the price does not change if traffic is heavy. For more luggage, choose an estate; for larger families, an MPV.
Heathrow terminals and drop-off rules
Heathrow has four working terminals. Terminal 5 has its own access road, Terminal 4 is on the southern side, and Terminals 2 and 3 are central. Tell us which one when you book. Since January 2026, every entry to a Heathrow drop-off zone costs £7, with a strict ten-minute limit and an £80 penalty notice for overstaying, halved if paid within 14 days. Friends dropping off can use the Long Stay car park, where the first 30 minutes are free. With us, the charge is covered by the fixed fare.
Coming home to the forest
We collect from Heathrow for the journey back to Lyndhurst at the same fixed fare. The driver tracks your flight and waits in arrivals with a name board. After a long flight, it is a good feeling to come off the M27 and into the trees.
Holiday lets and visitors staying in the forest
Not everyone booking from Lyndhurst lives there. The New Forest is full of holiday cottages, lodges and hotels, and many overseas visitors spend the last night of a UK trip in the forest before flying home from Heathrow. If you are staying in a holiday let, give us the property name and any directions the owner has sent, and tell us if the access road has a gate or a cattle grid. If you are in a hotel such as those around Lyndhurst or Brockenhurst, the driver will collect you from reception.
For visitors arriving at Heathrow and heading to the forest, the journey works the same way in reverse, and the driver will tell you a little about the forest roads as you come in.
