Welling is in the London Borough of Bexley, on the old Roman road of Watling Street, now the A207, with Danson Park and its Georgian mansion just to the south. It is about as far from Heathrow as you can get while still being in London: right across the city from west to east. A taxi from Heathrow Airport to DA16 Welling costs from £89 for a saloon, fixed at booking, and saves crossing the whole of London on public transport with luggage.
Across or around London
There are two main routes. Through London, the driver takes the A4 and M4 into the city, then the South Circular, the A205, through Catford and Eltham to the A2 and into Welling. It is around 30 miles, but with a lot of traffic lights. Around London, the driver takes the M25 clockwise all the way to junction 2 at Dartford, then the A2 back west into Welling. It is longer in miles, often over 40, but usually steadier. The driver will pick the faster route on the day.
Expect an hour to an hour and twenty minutes in normal traffic, and longer in the weekday rush hours. Late evening arrivals are often much quicker.
Around DA16
DA16 covers Welling town centre and Bellegrove Road, East Wickham, Falconwood's eastern edge and the roads around Danson Park. Most streets are residential with easy kerbside access. The A207 Bellegrove Road and Welling High Street are busy with buses, so if you live in a flat above a shop, tell us the nearest side road.
We also cover the rest of the borough and nearby areas: Bexleyheath, Sidcup, Blackfen, Erith, Eltham and Abbey Wood.
The Elizabeth line from Abbey Wood
There is a good public transport option for this route. Abbey Wood, a short bus ride north of Welling, is the eastern terminus of the Elizabeth line, and services run from there right through central London to Heathrow. With a bus to Abbey Wood, the whole trip takes around an hour and a half.
For a solo traveller with a small bag, that is cheaper. For families with luggage, older travellers or anyone landing late, the car door to door is easier, and for three or four passengers the fixed fare is competitive.
Heathrow terminals and meet and greet
Heathrow has four working terminals in three places: 2 and 3 in the centre, 5 at the western end and 4 on the southern side. Tell us your terminal when you book. A name board in the arrivals hall and live flight tracking come with every pickup. Delays move the pickup time automatically, at no cost to you.
Heathrow's drop-off charges
For your next departure, if someone drives you to Heathrow, every entry to a terminal drop-off zone has cost £7 since January 2026, with a ten-minute limit enforced by cameras. Overstaying brings an £80 penalty notice, reduced to £40 within 14 days. The free option is the Long Stay car park, with 30 minutes free and a shuttle bus. If you pre-book with us, it is included in the price you are quoted.
Is Gatwick or London City closer?
For Welling, London City Airport is the closest airport, about 8 miles away via the Blackwall Tunnel or the Woolwich Ferry, and Gatwick is about 35 miles. If your flight is from one of those, the booking form gives you a fixed price in the same way. For long-haul flights, though, Heathrow is often the only option, and that is what this page is for.
Timing your pickup for a Heathrow flight
As a guide, leave Welling about three and a half hours before a long-haul departure, to allow for the drive across or around London. For early flights, a pickup around 3am or 4am means quiet roads. We will confirm the time when you book.
Visiting family and long-haul luggage
Bexley has many families with roots around the world, and long-haul trips to visit relatives often mean heavy luggage both ways. A saloon takes two large cases; for more, choose an estate or MPV. If you are booking for a relative arriving at Heathrow, put their name and mobile number on the booking, and the driver will meet them in arrivals with a name board.
