Plymouth is a long way from London: over 200 miles, right on the border with Cornwall. Since the city's own airport closed in 2011, most long-haul and many short-haul flights for the far south-west go through Heathrow, Bristol or Exeter. For travellers landing at Heathrow, the journey home can be the hardest part of the trip. A taxi from Heathrow Airport to Plymouth costs from £409 for a saloon, fixed at booking, and takes you all the way to your door.
Two ways west
The driver chooses between two routes. The first is the M4 west to Bristol, then the M5 south past Taunton to Exeter, and the A38 across the southern edge of Dartmoor to Plymouth. It is motorway most of the way and usually the more predictable option. The second is the M3 and A303 past Stonehenge, then the A30 to Exeter and the A38. It is shorter in miles, but the A303 has single-carriageway sections that are slow on summer weekends.
Without stops, plan on three and three quarter to four hours. The M5 around Bristol and the A38 approaching Plymouth are where time is usually lost, along with the A303 in summer. Your driver will check the traffic before leaving Heathrow and choose the quicker route.
Breaks on the way
On a journey of nearly four hours, we suggest at least one break. Your driver will stop at a services whenever you ask, and Gordano on the M5 or Exeter services are convenient. With children or older passengers, tell us in advance and we will plan more stops.
When the car makes sense
The train is a strong option on this route. You can take the Elizabeth line or Heathrow Express to Paddington, or the RailAir coach to Reading, and then a Great Western Railway train to Plymouth, which takes around three hours from Paddington. For a solo traveller with light luggage, that is cheaper and often quicker.
The car makes sense when the train does not: a family with holiday luggage, a group of four or more, someone with mobility needs, a late-night landing after the last convenient train, or a destination outside the city where you would need another taxi from Plymouth station.
Plymouth and the surrounding area
We drop off anywhere in Plymouth: the city centre and the Hoe, the Barbican and Sutton Harbour, Mannamead, Plympton, Plymstock and the suburbs. Derriford Hospital and the University of Plymouth are regular drop-offs. Beyond the city, we cover the South Hams, Tavistock and the edge of Dartmoor, and across the Tamar Bridge into Cornwall, including Saltash, Torpoint and Looe. Any Tamar crossing toll is covered by the fixed fare.
Naval families and Devonport
Plymouth is home to HMNB Devonport, the largest naval base in Western Europe, and many service personnel and their families fly through Heathrow. If you need a pickup or drop-off at one of the base gates, tell us which gate. Drivers cannot enter the base, but they will take you to the right gate.
Heathrow terminals and drop-off charges
Tell us your Heathrow terminal when you book: Terminals 2 and 3 are central, Terminal 5 is at the western end, and Terminal 4 is on the southern side. A name board in the arrivals hall and live flight tracking come with every pickup. For your departure, if a friend drives you to Heathrow, every entry to a terminal drop-off zone has cost £7 since January 2026, with a ten-minute limit and an £80 penalty for overstaying. With a pre-booked car, the fixed fare covers it.
Choosing the right car
On a long journey, comfort matters. A saloon suits one or two passengers. An estate or MPV gives a family room to rest and keeps the luggage separate. Business travellers often choose the executive saloon or Mercedes S-Class.
Overnight and early-morning journeys
Many long-haul flights land at Heathrow early in the morning, after an overnight flight, and the last thing anyone wants then is to haul bags across Paddington. Leaving Heathrow at 7am, you are usually in Plymouth before lunch, with time to sleep in the back of the car. For departures, the opposite works: a pickup in Plymouth in the small hours gets you to Heathrow for a morning flight without a night in an airport hotel. Day or night, the price does not change.
What to tell us when you book
Give us your flight number and terminal, the full Plymouth or Devon address with postcode, the number of passengers and large cases, and any stops you want to make, perhaps to drop someone in Exeter or Taunton on the way. Each stop is priced into the fixed fare before you confirm. For rural Devon or Cornwall addresses, add directions or a what3words reference.
