Fly-cruise is one of the most popular ways to start a holiday from Southampton, and Heathrow is where most international passengers land. The two are around 65 miles apart, almost all of it on the M25 and M3. A taxi from Heathrow Airport to Southampton Cruise Terminal starts from £139 for a saloon, fixed at booking, and takes you from the arrivals hall to the right terminal for your ship.
Which terminal is your ship using?
Southampton has several cruise terminals spread across two dock areas, and getting the right one matters. The Ocean Terminal and the Queen Elizabeth II terminal are in the Eastern Docks, close to the city centre. The City Cruise Terminal, the Mayflower Terminal and the newer Horizon Cruise Terminal are in the Western Docks, which stretch a long way along the waterfront. The walk between the two dock areas is not something you want to do with cruise luggage.
Your cruise documents will tell you which terminal to use. Ships sometimes switch terminals between sailings, so check the latest information shortly before you travel and tell us when you book. Our drivers follow the port's signage and go to the correct drop-off point.
From the arrivals hall to the quayside
The driver takes the M4 spur and M25 south to junction 12, then the M3 all the way to Southampton. From the end of the M3 the route runs through the city towards the docks. On a clear road it is around an hour and a quarter.
On busy turnaround days several large ships can be changing passengers at once, and the roads into the docks get congested in the late morning. The M3 itself is usually steady, but the M25 around Heathrow can be slow at peak times. Your driver will check conditions and tell you if a different approach is quicker.
Timing your boarding window
Most cruise lines give passengers an allocated arrival time at the terminal rather than a single check-in deadline. If your flight lands early in the morning and your boarding window is not until the afternoon, there is time to spare. We can take a more relaxed pace, stop for breakfast, or drop you somewhere in the city first.
If your flight is delayed and the window is getting tight, we leave as soon as you are through arrivals. Tell us your ship, terminal and boarding time when you book so the driver can plan.
Cruise luggage needs space
Two people on a fortnight's cruise often have four large cases, formal clothes in suit carriers, and hand luggage on top. That will not fit in a saloon. For a couple we usually recommend an estate, and for a family an MPV or the eight-seat Multivan. If you are travelling with a group of friends on the same ship, the eight-seater keeps up to eight of you together, and is usually cheaper per person than several cars.
Heathrow's drop-off charges
If you are flying home through Heathrow at the end of the cruise and someone is collecting you privately, they should know about the forecourt charge. Since January 2026, every entry to a Heathrow terminal drop-off zone costs £7, with a ten-minute limit enforced by cameras and an £80 penalty notice for overstaying. The free option is the Long Stay car park, where the first 30 minutes cost nothing.
When you book with us, the fixed fare covers your driver's parking and drop-off costs. We meet you in arrivals and take care of the rest.
Collection after your cruise
We also run the return leg, from the cruise terminal to Heathrow for your flight home. Disembarkation times vary, so give us your ship's arrival time and your flight time. We will be waiting at the terminal pickup area once you are through.
Getting there without a car
The cheaper way is a coach or train. National Express runs coaches between Heathrow and Southampton, and by rail you can take the RailAir coach to Woking and then a South Western Railway train to Southampton Central. Either way you will still need a taxi from the coach or train station to the dock gate, because the terminals are not within easy walking distance with cruise luggage.
Staying in Southampton before you sail
Many passengers fly in a day early to build in a safety margin, which is sensible on long-haul routes. Southampton has hotels in the city centre, at the waterfront near Ocean Village and close to the M27. We can take you from Heathrow to your hotel, then from the hotel to the cruise terminal the next day, both at fixed prices.
